Chapter 2
Raina pouted, feeling wronged, and said angrily.
"Shawn, you're just in time. Let's abort the baby and get the divorce papers. I never want to see you again."
"Sweetie, what's wrong? Tell me what I did. I've always put up with everything and never complained," he pleaded.
"I've watched over you since childhood and chased you until I married you. When you say you don't want me, it breaks my heart."
But Raina wasn't about to let it go.
"So you remember I'm your wife? You just bury yourself in that lousy job!" she snapped.
"Why not just live with your work? I called today and you ignored it. You don't care about me anymore."
She grew more fired up, tears streaming down her cheeks again.
Shawn looked heartbroken seeing her cry.
I stood pale, watching them, feeling a hollow ache like cold wind in my heart.
Shawn was always swamped, working late and rarely home.
Whenever he returned, I ran the house and never let him do chores.
Despite many prenatal checkups, I never expected him to join, so I never told him the dates.
Back then, I was my family's favorite, cherished by all.
"For this prenatal checkup, you thought about sending your assistant instead of coming? Isn't this your kid too? If you won't show up, maybe the kid shouldn't be born!" Raina snapped angrily.
Shawn quickly reassured her, desperation creeping into his voice.
"Baby, don't even say that. You remember how happy I was—I didn't sleep for nights! This is our child. Of course I'm excited
"I thought the checkup was tomorrow and rearranged everything. I planned to surprise you."
Raina smacked him a few times, acting all stubborn.
"Don't sweet-talk me! You said you'd never miss my calls, but I've been abroad two years and you already missed one!" she huffed.
Shawn said meeting me felt like we'd known each other forever, like we were meant to be.
I was so naively happy, thinking fate had finally thrown me a bone and given me a new home.
"And on my birthday? You didn't even text me at midnight. You were a whole minute late," Raina pouted.
On my birthday, he brought home a bracelet, like an afterthought.
Since it cost much more than we earn, I thought he'd been saving for ages to buy it for me.
Though it didn't fit, I was over the moon hugging it, quietly touched.
"And two months ago, I burned my hand trying to make you soup, and you took an hour to get home." she continued.
That day, I had sudden appendicitis pain. Shawn arrived, ignored me, checked his phone, muttered about an emergency, and left immediately.
He didn't notice my hand shaking in pain as I reached for him.
So I ended up calling an ambulance myself and going to the hospital alone.
I told myself his company needed him and work was tough. He was working hard for us and our future.
As she ranted, I felt my sleeve dampen—tears streamed down, soaking my arm.
"You don't care about me like before. If you won't give your whole heart, I want nothing!" she said, voice shaking.
Shawn's frustrated voice reached her.
"Raina, you're my greatest treasure. I care deeply. Everything I do is for our future," he coaxed.
"I messed up. I'll work less and spend more time with you. Tell me what you want and I'll do it.
"Please don't say you don't want me or the baby. You're breaking my heart."
Shawn kept trying to comfort her, and after a while, Raina finally relented a bit.
"Fine, last time. Carry me home—princess style, and make me Honey-Glazed Pork Ribs."
Shawn scooped her up in his arms, flashing a playful grin as he spoke.
"As you wish, my queen!" he said affectionately.
Right as they were about to leave, Raina's gaze suddenly landed on me.
