Chapter 2
Gossip spread like wildfire, and with these girls, the drama just kept escalating.
I couldn't hold back anymore. I yanked off my high heels and hurled them straight at their windshield.
"Keep yapping, and I'll tear your mouth apart!" I snapped.
They reluctantly put their phones away, still muttering under their breath.
"Luna, you're such a bitch. No wonder Eric likes Allison better!"
"So what if you forced Mr. Lane to marry you? The one who's with him day and night is still Allison Hughes, his assistant!"
"Now Mr. Lane's making you walk by yourself. Bet he'll leave you all alone in the room tonight, too!"
At their words, I hurled my other high heel at them, which finally shut them up.
Everyone at the office thought I'd trapped Eric with some sneaky tricks.
Honestly, I never had feelings for him.
He was the one chasing after me—on my birthday, he chartered a private jet and flew in 1430 roses, just to impress me.
He even bought the biggest billboard in Riverdale and put up a huge declaration: [Luna, I'll love you forever.]
He was always sending me limited-edition designer bags and treating me to stays at luxury hotels.
He even roped his friends into rehearsing the proposal a dozen times, just to make sure I'd have the perfect experience.
I never thought he'd switch up on me so suddenly.
Was this what people meant when they said nobody cherished what came too easily?
Tired of being everyone's laughing stock, I kicked off my heels and marched forward barefoot.
I'd barely made it a few steps when a Maybach honked loudly at me. The driver rolled down the window and called out.
"Hey, isn't that Eric's bride? Why are you out here walking by yourself?"
It was Oliver—Eric's archrival.
He glanced at my bare feet, frowned, and waved me over to get in.
"Seriously? Just because of a traffic jam, he made his own bride walk to the hotel alone? Are you really going to marry a guy who'd treat you like that?" Oliver asked, disbelief in his voice.
I took a shaky breath, trying to hold it together.
"Do you think I'm being totally dumb, too?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Back when I first got together with Eric, everyone in the business said he was living every guy's dream.
He might not have Oliver's business chops, but when it came to charm and attracting women, Eric left Oliver in the dust.
So yeah, I'd heard people call me clueless more than once—thinking I'd struck gold with Eric, even though everyone knew he was notorious for being a womanizer.
"That's not what I meant. The road's clear now. Want me to ride you over to the wedding?" he asked, tapping the steering wheel.
I glanced out the window and saw Eric's wedding convoy finally starting to move.
As the lead car rolled past the Maybach, I spotted Allison sitting right where I should've been—my seat, stolen.
My nails dug into my own palms, the sharp bite of pain anchoring my fury.
Seeing my reaction, Oliver handed me his phone. "Want to give him a call?"
I shook my head, my voice firm and resolute. "You really can't stand him, right? How about I give you a chance to turn the tables on him—interested?
"Well, let's get married instead. Right now. Are you in?"
Oliver looked completely stunned.
"Are you kidding? You're about to get married to him!" he blurted out.
"Whatever, forget it if you don't want to," I retorted.
I gathered up my dress and made a move to get out.
Suddenly, an old woman rushed out from the side, threw herself in front of the car, and started yelling about being hurt.
Was she really trying to stage an accident?
I glanced at Oliver, whose face was gloomy, and he looked like he wasn't going to bother with her at all.
I shrank back and pulled my hand away from the door.
When no one got out, the old lady's moans grew even louder.
Soon, a girl in a miniskirt came running over from the sidewalk and banged on our window.
"Get out of the car! Can't you see you hit someone?
"If you don't settle this the way we want today, nobody's leaving!" the girl yelled.
I was just about to get out and confront them when Oliver reached over and grabbed my hand.
"Just stay put. I'll take care of it," he said.
