Chapter 3
Tim persuaded, "Mom, I did some research. You and Dad are just stuck in a rut like the other married couples. Have another honeymoon, and you two will be good again."
I didn't agree with Tim, but he added, "You will have my support if the honeymoon doesn't work."
Jake was probably convinced by Tim in the same way.
Ben and Judy arranged a trip to a resort in the mountains for Jake, Tim, and me.
Tim seemed excited. On the way, he held my hand and Jake's at the same time.
It was supposed to be a happy scene, but both Jake and I looked awkward.
Night fell. While Jake was in the shower, Kate called.
I raised my eyebrows and picked up the phone.
Over the phone, Kate whined, "Jake, why aren't you back yet? I am lonely and afraid."
After a chuckle, I opened my mouth, "He won't go back to town tonight. He'll have to go see you tomorrow."
I intended to get the divorce agreement signed tonight.
There came no response. After a moment of silence, Kate's voice turned cold. "Betty, how dare you take him away from me! I will make you sorry. I will take everything away from you, including your son."
I responded, "I don't want him..."
Kate hung up the phone before I finished my speech. My eyebrows were knitted.
Soon, Jake walked out of the bathroom. I told him about the call from Kate.
Jake casually said, "She's just a bank clerk and tries to bluff you. Ignore her."
I sighed. "Okay. Let's finalize our divorce as quickly as possible. Check the documents I sent you, and tell me your opinions."
Jake pulled a long face, and his tone was unhappy. "Got it."
Things went on well because Jake didn't want custody of Tim while I didn't ask for his money.
At first, Tim kept hanging around us and brought us water or snacks from time to time. What a little angel!
When he realized that Jake and I were determined to divorce, he went to sleep without making a scene.
Jake took a sip of water and sighed, "Man, I'm getting too old for this. I can't stay up late anymore. Betty, you were there whenever I stayed up late. We stayed up late to unwrap the gifts on our wedding night, cram for exams in college, and watch the sunrise in high school."
He shut up when I shot him a cold glance.
I didn't want to share anything with Jake, including memories.
The next day, Jake and I went from the resort to the city hall to file for a divorce.
We didn't keep anything from Tim.
Tim was unusually quiet all the way home. He didn't say a word, no matter how hard I tried to get him to open his mouth. I sighed inwardly.
After the application form was handed in, Jake suddenly said, "Betty, how about a bet? We will withdraw the application if we come to the city hall again. I believe that we won't divorce."
I said nothing. Jake had a common problem like other intelligent people, and that was overconfidence. He always thought that he got everything under control.
That afternoon, Kate called me and accused me of trying to drive a wedge between Jake and her.
'Me? Driving a wedge between my husband and his mistress? She must be insane,' I thought. Without hesitation, I blacklisted her phone number.
Two days later, Tim disappeared.
He went missing at the playground in the shopping mall. That place was packed, so it was difficult to find a clue.
The Robertson family began a frantic search, and we didn't drink or eat anything for 13 hours.
In the end, it was confirmed with the help of the police that Tim had been deliberately taken away from the shopping mall by someone.
The location of the suspect and Tim was soon found.
At the news that they were in some building to the east, Jake changed his expression drastically and said, "Tim was taken away by Kate."
The cops looked surprised, and Ben embarrassedly explained who Kate was.
Sobbing, Judy gave Jake a slap across the face.
I kept my cool and said to Jake, "Appease Kate, and ask her out. We will go pick Tim up. Tim's safety comes first."
Jake nodded. He called Kate. "Where are you? I didn't contact you because I was busy finalizing my divorce with Betty. You know I miss you. Let's meet at the gym."
After Jake hung up, the cops quickly took me to rescue Tim.
The car stopped outside Kate's house. The cops and I waited for the suspect to leave.
As time ticked by, I became more and more restless. I couldn't help but ask, "Why don't I go in now?"
The police captain frowned. "Let your husband give her another call."
I grabbed my phone and called Jake, who was waiting at the gym. "She is still inside. Urge her."
Jake responded, "I already texted her, but she didn't answer my texts."
My heart skipped a beat, and I had a sinking feeling. "Call her, now!"
Right then, someone shouted, "The door's open! The door's open!"
