Chapter 4
I stared at the result on the pregnancy test, totally dazed.
What a huge coincidence.
At all times, I end up pregnant now.
But then I remembered Carol, who was pregnant around the same time as me, and a cold shiver crept over me.
Could Andrew really be that shameless?
Mom was both shocked and thrilled. She hurried over and said, "Lynn, look, this baby couldn't have come at a better time.
"Once you're expecting, men always settle down."
Even Dad said, "After all these years, Andrew's only slipped up this once. You ought to give him another chance."
But just thinking about it sent chills down my spine.
I threw myself at the bedside, frantically searching for my birth control pills.
To my horror, every single pill had been replaced with lookalike vitamins.
Thinking back to how desperate he'd been to get me into bed these past two months, my jaw clenched, and I couldn't stop shaking.
All I could do was clench my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms.
Andrew was really scheming.
With just a bit of maneuvering, he could legitimately bring Carol's baby into our family.
Since marrying Carol was out of the question, he decided to use me as his backup plan.
I collapsed to the floor, letting out a bitter laugh, my tears mixing with the sound.
My seven years were so absurd.
Just then, Andrew sent me a text.
[Lynn, don't be mad, okay?]
[I know you don't want Carol around. Once the lawsuit's over, I'll send her away. Let's live our life together, alright?]
Below the message was a link to the live stream of the court hearing.
Andrew was a well-respected lawyer, and everyone had been waiting with bated breath for this long-running lawsuit.
Seeing him in court, so full of confidence and energy, my eyes stung with unshed tears.
This was the Andrew I once loved most.
He always stood up for the underdog, never backing down from a tough case, no matter how impossible it seemed.
But this time, he was fighting for the woman he truly loved.
Maybe Andrew threw himself into divorce law all because of Carol.
When the trial ended, Andrew won the case.
Carol, unable to contain her excitement, rushed straight into his arms.
Andrew pulled Carol into a full embrace, his smile breaking free, impossible to hide.
Andrew's team had a few young lawyers who really knew how to work the online crowd.
As soon as the trial wrapped up, they couldn't wait to start a live stream on their own accounts, goofing off and making a scene.
"Guys, smash that follow! If we hit 100k, we'll take a case for free," one of them shouted.
"Nobody does divorce cases like our boss," another chimed in.
I closed out the page for my scheduled abortion and clicked to join the call.
Everyone started hyping it up.
"Andrew, hurry up. We've got a client."
Andrew smiled wryly at the camera and joined the call.
My pale face appeared on screen, with the abortion procedure instructions clearly visible behind me.
I spoke, each word deliberate and soft, barely more than a whisper.
"Attorney Grant," I said.
Our eyes locked through the camera.
"Would you take a divorce case for a couple who've got the license but never had the ceremony?" I asked.
