Chapter 2
Andrew and I should've gotten married years ago.
But then he took on a divorce case.
The defendant was a real piece of work. After court, he smashed Andrew with a brick, and Andrew ended up in the ICU.
The defendant's family was loaded, and even Andrew couldn't win the case. It dragged on for two years.
Just recently, he told me the case was finally making some real progress.
You could totally see his spirits lift, and he even started talking about setting a date for the wedding again.
Now I realized, Carol was the one who filed that divorce case.
"Lynn, don't worry. I'll help you get to the bottom of this," Sophie said.
I shot her a grateful look.
After all, I didn't have a job or any social life these days.
I had no idea what Andrew was up to out there.
My phone had been blowing up since last night.
Andrew kept calling, trying to find me.
Today was supposed to be our wedding day.
I finally just shut it off.
With the address Sophie had dug up, I hopped in a cab and headed straight for Carol's office.
The moment she saw me, her face went pale, and she instinctively took a step back.
I gave her a sly little smile.
"Carol, why didn't you show up for my wedding with Andrew?" I asked.
Carol's expression froze, and it took her a long moment before she finally replied.
"Busy with work," she mumbled.
But I caught the way she bit her lip and the envy flickering in her eyes.
I asked, "Didn't Andrew tell you our wedding was called off?
"I just gave you the chance to take my place. Aren't you thrilled?"
Carol's face turned deathly pale, and her voice shook.
She said, "I don't know what you're talking about.
"Andrew's my cousin. Nothing was going on between us."
My eyes landed on her neck.
Love bites were scattered all over, radiating possessiveness and an intimacy that couldn't be missed.
And there was a platinum necklace catching the light at her collarbone.
Carol threw a hand over her neck and stepped back, dodging my eyes.
"Well, you spent two years fighting a divorce case, and now you end up in bed with my husband?" I said, my voice laced with sarcasm.
I stepped right up to her, snatched her arm away, and flicked up her necklace.
Dangling at the end was a ring, the exact same design as my engagement ring.
I let go, scoffing coldly.
"Guess even a one-of-a-kind custom piece can have a twin," I sneered.
Carol's lips quivered; she couldn't even find the words to defend herself.
I suddenly felt utterly drained.
Andrew had her name on the wedding invite, gave her a twin of my engagement ring, as if she were part of this marriage too.
The night before our wedding, he brought Carol along to meet his friends, introduced her around, and had dinner with them.
Honestly, Andrew couldn't bear to let Carol suffer even the tiniest bit.
So what was I to him?
My seven years, did any of it even matter?
Carol was trembling, and all of a sudden she dropped to her knees in front of me, begging, her voice small and shaky.
"Lynn, Andrew's just being nice to me. If you keep acting so paranoid, he's going to be really upset with you," she pleaded.
"Lynn."
Andrew's furious voice rang out behind me. He hurried over and helped Carol to her feet.
He put himself between us, giving me a sharp look.
"What the hell are you doing? She's pregnant. How could you make her kneel like that?" Andrew snapped.
I shot Andrew a frosty look.
"You care so much; what, is she carrying your child?" I sneered.
