Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
The hundredth note came on a Tuesday.
Clara's school let out early for a blizzard warning. I was an hour away, locked in a mandatory strategy meeting I couldn't walk out of.
So Ethan swore he'd get her. One o'clock, on the dot.
Handled. Leaving the office now.
He texted that at 12:45. I let myself relax.
Later I pieced together the rest. At one o'clock, Ethan had confirmed through the school pickup app that he was already outside, so Clara was released to the covered parent pickup area.
Then no one came for her.
At 3:30, my phone rang. The school nurse.
"Mrs. Davis? Clara's in the ER at St. Jude's. She was waiting outside the gates in the snow for almost two hours. Her temperature dropped dangerously low. She's in and out of consciousness."
I don't remember leaving the meeting. I remember my boss shouting my name and the door closing on his voice.
I drove through the storm like I wanted to die.
When I reached the ER, Clara was under a pile of thermal blankets, an IV in her thin arm. Her lips were blue.
I called Ethan. Straight to voicemail. I called ten times. Nothing.
Then I opened our family tracking app.
His dot wasn't at the school. It wasn't at his office.
It was parked outside Lila's apartment.
I opened Instagram. Lila's account was public. Her latest story was posted an hour ago.
Ethan, sleeves rolled up, a wrench in his hand, crouched under her kitchen sink. Jax sat on the counter laughing.
Pipes froze in the storm and our knight in shining armor came to the rescue. So grateful Jax has a real man in his life.
A frozen pipe.
He left our daughter to freeze at a school gate so he could fix another woman's plumbing.
At six, Clara stabilized. She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling.
She didn't ask for her dad. She didn't cry.
She turned her head toward me. Her voice was a raw whisper.
"Mom. Do you have a pen?"
I found one in my purse. She asked for paper. I gave her the back of the discharge form.
Slow, shaking strokes.
Note #100. I don't have a dad anymore.
She set the pen down and closed her eyes.
I sat there holding her cold hand, and something in me went very quiet, and very still.
He thought he'd married a soft woman.
He was about to find out who I was.
