Chapter 3
The plane touched down at 4 a.m.
The airport in my hometown was tiny, and the air had that damp smell I grew up with.
I skipped going home and took a cab straight to the best hotel in town.
After a hot shower, I stretched out on the big, soft bed, wide awake, not a little bit sleepy.
On my backup phone, Chloe was still dutifully live-streaming the chaos at the office for me. "Sarah, breaking news. Someone dug up that Director Carter used company team-building funds to take Emily to Paradise Isle.
"He claimed it was a team inspection trip, but the only person who went was Emily.
"The finance department is pulling an all-nighter to audit the books, and word is it's already been reported to the group's Compliance Committee.
"Oh my god, this isn't a scandal anymore. This is straight-up corruption."
I read the message, as I'd expected.
Adam's always been the type to take advantage of any little opportunity.
He used to take home printer paper and coffee beans from the office, and I turned a blind eye.
I never expected him to actually have the nerve to mess with company funds.
Guess that made things easier for me.
Originally, my plan included anonymously reporting him to the Tax Department and the Compliance Committee. But now, it looks like the nosy coworkers at the office have already done it for me.
When someone was down, everyone loved to pile on.
Adam was always throwing his weight around at work, stepping on toes and making enemies left and right.
Now that he's in trouble, there'll be plenty of people ready to stab him in the back, way more than me.
My phone buzzed. It was a short video from Chloe.
In the video, Director Lewis looked furious as she ordered two security guards to tear down the photos from the bulletin board.
A crowd of coworkers had gathered around, whispering and gossiping.
The camera zoomed in, and I could hear their conversation loud and clear. "Man, I never would've guessed Director Carter was that kind of guy. He always put on that perfect gentleman act."
"And Emily? Please. She's been walking around with her nose in the air ever since Director Carter started backing her up."
"Well, serves them right. They're both toast now."
"Sarah's savage. Quiet as a mouse most days, but when she makes a move, it's like dropping a bomb."
"About time. I couldn't stand those two for ages."
I saved the video.
All this would be hard evidence for the divorce case, showing Adam was the one at fault and totally blew up our marriage.
I transferred Chloe 200 dollars. [Thanks for your hard work. Get some rest. Let me know if anything else comes up.]
[Sarah, you're too kind. I'm not tired at all. I'm having a blast watching the drama. Don't worry, I'll be the first to send you any juicy gossip.] Chloe was on point.
After handling the office drama, I opened another folder.
Inside were two addresses.
One was Adam's parents' place.
The other was Emily's parents' place.
I'd done my homework. Emily was an only child. Her dad was the vice principal at a local middle school, and her mom was a community director.
They were the kind of family that was obsessed with keeping up appearances.
I grabbed a hotel notepad and a pen and started writing.
One was for Adam's parents. [Dear Mr. and Mrs. Carter, I hope this letter finds you well.
[Sorry to reach out like this. I was married to Adam for seven years, faithful and did my part. But his heart was elsewhere. He's had an affair with his coworker Emily for some time, spending our joint money on her.
[He used company money to take Emily on a secret trip to Paradise Isle during our anniversary. Everyone at the office knows, and it's caused a huge mess.
[I've lost all hope and decided to divorce Adam. I've attached all the evidence you might need.
[Sarah, your daughter-in-law.]
Another letter was for Emily's parents. [Dear Mr. Lane and Mrs. Lane,
[I'm Sarah Evans, Adam's wife. Sorry for being so direct, but I felt you needed to know. I bet you're proud of Emily, but I doubt you realize your precious daughter has been breaking up someone else's marriage behind your back.
[She's been fooling around with my husband, Adam, and has been taunting and insulting me with some truly cruel words.
[I can't understand how a family with such a good reputation could raise a daughter with so little shame.
[I've attached some photos and chat logs so you can see who your daughter is.
[A wife hurt by your daughter.]
I finished the letters, folded them up, and slipped them into two envelopes.
Then I pulled out another batch of printed photos from my suitcase.
This time, they were A4 sheets.
Along with the Paradise Isle photos, I threw in the explicit chat screenshots I'd backed up, hotel booking receipts, and screenshots of Adam making big transfers to Emily.
I made sure each type had a hefty pile.
I stuffed each envelope with all this "evidence" and sealed them up.
The sky was starting to lighten.
I ordered a same-day courier from the hotel and had the two envelopes sent out to their addresses.
Once that was done, I pulled the curtains shut and finally let the exhaustion wash over me.
But I knew the real show was only beginning.
Adam and Emily were probably about to land by now.
Waiting for them was a storm of judgment from the company, their families, and society itself, coming at them from every direction.
And I'd be watching from above, cold and detached, the final judge of it all.
